Amendment to the Referendum Act 2012

Transform Bermuda's political system to have more democracy by amending the Referendum Act 2012 to allow for a petition signed by 10% of the electorate to automatically trigger a binding referendum.

Why is this important?

Bermuda's political system needs to be reformed. There is a breakdown in trust of politicians and this does not work in Bermuda’s public interest or for the island’s common good.

In addition to the current representational democracy, an amendment to the Referendum Act will give Bermuda’s electorate the ability to agree or disagree with any given proposal or issue and have a say in how Bermuda will face those changes.

Switzerland already has this unique system (semi-direct democracy) in place and it works. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voting_in_Switzerland

Issues and initiatives would be decided by referendum and specifically through a mechanism whereby a petition signed by 10% of the electorate automatically triggers a binding referendum.

Many issues are not being addressed adequately by Bermuda's politicians, whether they be too sensitive, do not adhere to the ruling party's agenda, not convenient to the electoral cycle or otherwise.

If this amendment to the Referendum Act is passed, subsequent petitions with enough voters' signatures will be actionable by finally making politicians truly accountable to the electorate. This will encourage better initial transparency and consultation.
