American Water Needs to Have Backup Water for Its Customers

I urge American Water to arrange for a backup water supply for all of its customers. As West Virginia American Water customers have learned, having only one water source means that a spill can result in the water being tainted for weeks.

American Water is the largest private drinking water supplier in the nation. On January 9, 2014, in Charleston, West Virginia, a chemical spilled into American Water's water supply for 300,000 people, making it unusable for anything but flushing toilets. Unfortunately, there was no other source of water available, so American Water customers were without clean water for weeks and the contaminated water spread throughout the system. American Water needs to commit to preventing this from happening again and will arrange for a backup water supply for its customers in West Virginia and elsewhere. If you are an American Water customer, please include a comment letting them know that you are a paying customer and demand better water safety.
