I donate regularly at the Red Cross because my blood is O Positive and lacks a certain virus that most adults have. Which means my blood goes to babies and children in need of transfusions. I am very proud of that and it is the reason I donate every couple of months.
But I am embarrassed of this because I have gay friends who cannot because there is one question in the screening process that is 100% discriminatory. That question reads: Have you ever had sex with another man, even once since 1977? If you answer yes to this question you cannot donate.
HIV/AIDS testing is to a point where we can tell if someone has HIV/AIDS within several weeks of exposure. This question should be rephrased as: Have you had sex with another man, other than your life partner, within the last four weeks? This would be more fair to American citizens who only want to help others but are being turned away. The question as it stands is the same as discriminating against someone purely on skin color; it is biased and needs to be replaced at once.
I've asked the American Red Cross if it is they who impose this appalling rule and they have told me it is enforced by government agencies such as the FDA. Please sign this petition. Let's bring this issue all the way to the top, and make certain that unfair policies such as this question are removed so the people who are being targeted can fairly, and justly be able to give life saving help to others. This is America the land of the free and the brave. Be brave and free others from outdated policies.

Yo dono sangre frecuentemente a la Cruz Roja porque es O positivo y no tiene un tipo de virus que la mayoría de los adultos tienen. La pregunta debería ser replanteada de esta manera: ¿Ha tenido relaciones sexuales con otro hombre, aparte de su compañero estable, en las últimas cuatro semanas? Esto sería más justo para los ciudadanos americanos que sólo quieren ayudar a otras personas y son rechazados. Tal como está planteada ahora la pregunta es como discriminar en contra de alguien por el color de su piel; es prejuiciosa y debe ser remplazada inmediatamente.

He preguntado a la Cruz Roja si son ellos los que imponen esta regla tan abominable y me han dicho que es impuesta por agencias gubernamentales como la FDA. Por favor firmen esta petición. Hay que poner este asunto a flote, y asegurarnos de que preguntas injustas como ésta son removidas para que la gente a quien atacan puedan con justicia dar a otras la ayuda que puede salvar sus vidas. Esto es América, la tierra de los libres y los valientes. Sean valientes y liberen a otros de estas políticas anticuadas.
