Legalize Skateboarding in Chicago

Legalize Skateboarding in Chicago by Repealing 9-80-200(b) and 9-80-200(c) from the Chicago Municipal Code

(b) No person shall ride a skateboard upon any roadway or sidewalk in a business district.
(c) No person upon roller skates, or riding in or by means of any coaster, skateboard, toy vehicle, or similar device, shall go upon any roadway except while crossing a street on a crosswalk and when so crossing such person shall be granted all the rights and shall be subject to all the duties applicable to pedestrians. This section shall not apply upon any street while set aside as a play street.

Why is this important?

Skateboarding is a legitimate sport enjoyed by many citizens. Skateboards can also be used for transportation. Skateboards are good for making up the “last mile” between transit stations and final destinations. Skateboards can be taken inside of buildings which makes them less prone to theft than bicycles left outside. Active, Human Powered transportation is the way of the future. The city has made great strides in encouraging Cycling as a mode of transportation. Lets do the same for Skaters and Rollerbladers as well.
