Make investment in our City’s neighborhood libraries a priority

We know that safe, welcoming, high-quality and well-programmed public spaces create neighborhoods and communities that are healthier, better connected, more proud of where they live and more confident in the ability of their government. A city that prioritizes such essential services and facilities for its people is a progressive city that is always moving forward.

With the proposed “Rebuild” investment, the Free Library of Philadelphia will be able to upgrade and transform Philadelphia’s public library facilities, improving the lives of over 1 million Philadelphia residents.

Make investment in our city’s neighborhood libraries a priority!

Why is this important?

The Mayor’s Rebuild Initiative is an important step in adequately supporting the Free Library’s already established Building Inspiration campaign in which 5 libraries have already been designed and funded. With the Rebuild Initiative, the Free Library has an opportunity not only to better serve their constituents but to also serve as a leader, to build and enhance facilities that do not just keep pace, but that define the future for all public libraries.

Every neighborhood library should be upgraded to provide:

i. A safe place for children to learn and grow, to go to after school and have the facility and resources that are truly conducive to learning;

ii. A place where job-seekers can develop stronger digital literacy skill sets and learn how to build their resume, learn to search and apply for jobs so that they can participate in the larger economy of the community and therefore the City;

iii. A place for discovery, serendipity, conversation, community and civic engagement;

iv. A place that establishes the importance of community health as a goal – healthy communities are learning communities, supportive communities are economically sound and civically engaged.
