Why is this important?
President Obama has nominated Merrick Garland, now Chief Justice of the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court. [1] Judge Garland was the valedictorian of his class at Niles West High School. [2] But so far, Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Republican Senate Judiciary chair Chuck Grassley insist that the Senate will not consider Judge Garland's nomination.
Illinois Republican Senator Mark Kirk has said that he will meet with Judge Garland. [3] But as Judge Garland's home state Republican Senator, we in Illinois need Mark Kirk to do more. We need Mark Kirk to press his own Republican leaders for a debate and vote on Judge Garland's nomination.
