Nationalize Oil, Gas, Coal

By Darcie DiBasio (Contact)

To be delivered to: The United States House of Representatives, The United States Senate, and President Barack Obama

Petition Statement
The national and multinational oil, gas, and coal companies operating in the United States are not good corporate citizens. Every year, multiple accidents caused by their greed have wreaked havoc on the environment, destroyed the quality of life for residents, and, in some cases, actually cost the lives of American workers.

The U.S. government has not seen fit to properly regulate or tax these corporations. Instead, these corporations have reaped record profits while ignoring safety and the environment, and are being paid millions in taxpayer-funded corporate welfare checks.

The economy, the environment, and the health and quality of life for current U.S. residents - and future generations - are being harmed, and will remain at risk as long as these corporations operate as they do now. They must be stopped.

Therefore, we demand that these industries be nationalized so that the American citizens, through their elected representatives, can have a say in how these industries are regulated and managed in safe and environmentally sound ways.

Petition Background

Multinational, record-profit making oil, gas, and coal
companies are not in business to operate in a way that is safe for the environment, their workers, or nearby residents. They increase their bottom line by ignoring safety and environmental regulations, by avoiding taxes, and by sending lobbyists to pick up their millions of dollars in corporate welfare.

They should not be allowed to do what BP did to the Gulf; they should not be able to force Pennsylvanians to live with flammable tap water. They should not be allowed to force workers into dangerous mines with multiple safety violations. They must be stopped.

We need to swing the pendulum back away from the worldview in which it is seen as a "good thing" for these corporations to get welfare from the taxpayers, and where it is seen as a good government practice to let them regulate themselves. We can do this by calling for nationalization, an action that many nations have already taken.

I'm calling on everyone to demand nationalization of these industries.
