Plan B For Hay

By Plan B For Hay (Contact)

To be delivered to: Hay-on-Wye Town Council

Petition Statement
We, the undersigned, strongly oppose the building of a new supermarket/retail development to fund the new school Hay needs

Petition Background

To be delivered also to: Powys County Council, the Brecon Beacons National Park Planning Authority and the Welsh Assembly Government.

We are convinced that a new second supermarket will detrimentally affect the economy of Hay-on-Wye’s small, and as yet intact Market Town. There are other proven and viable options to funding Hay-on-Wye’s proposed and much needed new school, and we are pursuing these with vigour as alternatives.

However, there are just 1250 registered voters in Hay-on-Wye. We are a tiny, intact community with a fragile market and tourist economy - and no chain stores. Our High Street is precious and unique. We need your help to preserve it, and our way of life, now a rarity in Great Britain. Within a 4 mile radius of Hay-on-Wye, we delivered 3000 questionnaires (2 per household) to our local community and we now know that:

82% Agree that a new second supermarket will result in shops and local suppliers closing

75% Agree that a new second supermarket will result in people losing jobs

70% Agree that a new second supermarket will have a negative environmental impact on our town

Please can you help us in our battle with big business over democracy? We cannot do this alone, we are just too small.

DO PLEASE sign our petition…….!

Many thanks
