Portland City Council: don't delay Earned Sick Days

By Steve Hughes (Contact)

To be delivered to: Portland City Council

Petition Statement
Portland City Council: Please pass a strong Earned Sick Days ordinance right away. 80% of service workers don't have the right to take even one day off from work when they or a family member are ill. Your leadership at the local level will give us the leverage we need to pass this law statewide.

Petition Background

80% of service workers--many of them women and people of color--don't have the right to take even one day off from work when they or a family member are ill. The Portland City Council is preparing to pass an ordinance that will allow ALL workers to have this basic right. However, Oregon's big business interests are telling them to wait, and defer action to the state legislature. We know what these lobbyists are really trying to do: delaying and deferring action just gives them more time to fight this policy. But, if we pass this in Portland, it will give us the real leverage we need to pass a bill for all of Oregon. Tell the Portland City Council not to bend to pressure from big business lobbyists and continue taking a leadership role on this issue that affects so many working people.
