President Obama and Members of Congress: Oppose the Campus Rapist Protection Act

Rep. Matt Salmon (R-AZ) has proposed legislation that, if enacted, would require colleges and universities in the United States to cover up sexual assaults that occur on campus by prohibiting colleges and universities from investigating sexual assault allegations unless law enforcement becomes involved in a particular case. While the proposed legislation is officially called the Safe Campus Act, it might as well be called the Campus Rapist Protection Act, since the proposed legislation would protect rapists who sexually assault college students on campus, if the sexual assault is not reported to law enforcement.

Why is this important?

U.S. Rep. Matt Salmon (R-AZ) has officially proposed legislation that would protect rapists who sexually assault college students on campus. I'm not kidding when I say that.

Salmon has proposed the federal Safe Campus Act (H.R. 3403), which, if enacted, would prohibit colleges and universities from investigating sexual assaults that occur on campus and make it more difficult for colleges and universities to remove students who rape others.

While the legislation is officially called the Safe Campus Act, it might as well be called the Campus Rapist Protection Act, since that's exactly what the legislation would do, if it were to become law. That's because the legislation would make it a lot easier for college rapists to get away with raping someone. Rape is a horrific and criminal act, and allegations of rape should be taken seriously, not swept under the rug.

We, the signatories of this petition, call for President Barack Obama and members of both houses of Congress to oppose H.R. 3403, as, if H.R. 3403 were to become law, it would make college students less safe and more vulnerable to being sexually assaulted. This petition is addressed to the President and all members of both houses of Congress.
