Save the Berkeley Animal Rights Center!

Berkeley City Council: Tell the City Attorney to stop the political intimidation of the Berkeley Animal Rights Center.

Why is this important?

The Berkeley Animal Rights Center (ARC) was recently sent a 30-Day Notice to Cure or Quit alleged defaults in a lease agreement with the City of Berkeley. These "defaults" include making improvements to the space (such as painting), having a lockbox on the door, and having improper signage -- all of which were approved by the city's agent in writing or are common practice by other tenants in the building.

These spurious allegations, along with inside information, lead us to believe the notice is politically motivated. Since receiving the letter, we have tried negotiating with the City, but have been met with hostility and aggression.

ARC is an example of democracy and activism in the city that spearheaded the Free Speech Movement. With values such as nonviolence, inclusivity, and mutual aid, ARC represents the best in Berkeley. The Center trains and educates diverse volunteers in First Amendment advocacy and nonviolence, serves as an example to people around the world who love animals and has attracted many people to visit Berkeley.
