To: President Donald Trump

Save the Pawnee Buttes

Whereas: The area known as the Pawnee Buttes in northeastern Colorado represent a unique ecological area,

And, whereas: due to the area’s rugged terrain it remains relatively undamaged by over grazing and farming,

And, whereas: the area is used by numerous bird species as a nesting and rookery area,

And, whereas: the area represents an important historical landmark along the Trappers Trail and the Goodnight-Loving trail,

And, whereas: the area yields evidence that it has been inhabited off and on since the Clovis peoples (Paleo-Indian period),

And, whereas: recently the ecological, geological and historical integrity of the area has been threatened by encroachment of horizontal drilling for gas and oil.

We the undersigned ask the President of the United States to use the signatory power vested to his office to declare the Pawnee Buttes and surrounding areas of significance a National Monument under the Antiquities Act of 1906.

Why is this important?

The Pawnee Buttes are two, erosion created, landmarks located in Weld County Colorado. North by northeast of Greeley Colorado they are the prominent features of the Pawnee National Grasslands. They have historic, ecological, anthropological and geological significance. They are endangered by development and mechanized use, and need to be preserved for posterity.
