I want to back Senator Ted Lieu's Bill to help quell the amount of sex offenders that go missing under California's new state law that. Instead of sending sex offenders who tamper with their monitoring devices back to prison it sends them to county jails which are often over crowded and results in extremely early release with lapses in monitoring which often leads to re-offenses.

"Lieu cited last month's arrest of Sidney Jerome DeAvila, a parolee charged with killing his grandmother in Stockton.
DeAvila disabled his ankle bracelet at least seven times, according to records, but served little time behind bars. Most recently, he was sentenced to 30 days in the San Joaquin County jail for tampering with his bracelet and failing to register as a sex offender. A judge ordered his release a week later because of overcrowding, and within a week he was arrested for robbing, raping and killing his 76-year-old grandmother in her home." Senator Lieu would make it a mandatory 3 year prison sentence for Sex offenders if they tamper with their monitoring equipment.

Why is this important?

Senator Lieu would make it a mandatory 3 year prison sentence for Sex offenders who tamper with their monitoring equipment. This will not only help with effective monitoring but also dissuades them from committing repeat offenses. Please join me in signing this petition to enact SB57.
