Ever felt trapped in your job?
Meet Maria.
She came to the United States on a six month visa to care for a disabled woman. Her employers took away her passport, refused to pay her, and literally trapped her in their home.
It took her 13 months to escape that job.
Now Maria cleans houses to support her family. But because Maria doesn’t have a formal pay history, either from her time doing home care or her current work cleaning houses, she may not even be eligible to get on the path to earned legal status.
We need to do right by women like Maria.
Senator Mazie Hirono is calling attention to this and similar issues by chairing a full Judiciary hearing on Women and Immigration on March 18th. We think every member of the Committee should be there to understand the particular challenges facing immigrant women.
If you agree, please tell the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee to join Senator Hirono at this hearing.
The last time major immigration reform legislation was passed, we failed to explore these unique challenges. Immigrant women have suffered because of it. Let’s not make the same mistake twice.
Thank you.
