Tell Orange County to Ban Fracking Now!

To be delivered to Orange County Board of Supervisors

Petition Statement

I urge you to protect Orange County communities and ban fracking now.

Across the country, fracking has caused contamination of drinking water, toxic air pollution and property damage. The fracking operations in north Orange County sit atop the county's groundwater basin that provides drinking water to 2.4 million people. Fracking is not worth the risk.

With increasing threats of drought and climate change, we need to act now to protect our drinking water. Please support a ban on fracking in Orange County.
There are currently 1,790 signatures. NEW goal - We need 2,000 signatures!

Petition Background

Fracking has been linked to over 1,000 cases of water contamination across the country, and been confirmed in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Texas. Fracking operations in towns like Yorba Linda and Fullerton pose an immediate threat to the groundwater basin managed by the Orange County Water District, which provides drinking water to 2.4 million people.

Orange County has invested hundreds of millions of dollars to ensure a state of the art groundwater management system, and fracking poses a direct threat to these investments and water reliability in Orange County. Fracking well casings are all that protect groundwater from contamination yet have a 6% failure rate immediately and a 50% failure over a 30-year time period.

Orange County is in a sensitive region where a major earthquake can cause liquefaction, landslides and major infrastructure and property damage. On top of that, fracking waste disposal has caused a significant increase of earthquakes in Ohio and Oklahoma.

We have the right to ban fracking and other extreme extraction techniques through its zoning and police powers. Cities and municipalities have the right to ban fracking and any oil and gas extraction thanks to the California Constitution.

Tell the Orange County Board of Supervisors to protect our communities and ban fracking now! We’ll deliver your signature and additional message directly to your elected officials.
