I want to thank you for having the courage to be the first in your party to say that Congress should extend the Bush-era income tax cuts for 98% of Americans right away without requiring that they also be extended for the richest 2%. I hope that House Speaker Boehner and the rest of the Republican members of Congress will soon follow in your footsteps. This is clearly the will of the American people.

Petition Background

While I don’t agree with Rep. Tom Cole on many things, I appreciate that he had the courage to say that Congress should extend the Bush-era income tax cuts for 98% of Americans right away without requiring that they also be extended for the richest 2%. It is not easy to take such a public position that is not yet supported by Republican party leaders and rank and file members.

Giving 98% of Americans a tax cut right now is an issue that both Democrats and Republicans can agree on. Some Republicans are trying to silence Rep. Cole because they want to hold a tax cut for 98% of Americans hostage in order to get huge tax cuts for the richest 2%. I think that’s wrong, and I would like to show Rep. Cole that there is bipartisan support for his proposal. If we can get 500 signatures on this petition, we’ll print them out and hand deliver them to his office at the Capitol in Washington.
