UC President Napolitano and UC Chancellors: Stop Unfair Paycuts during Holiday Closures

We believe that all UC employees should have the choice to use their personal time off for family, personal and religious needs. This is not the case during the mandatory holiday closures.
The forced “holiday closures” are mandated on Teamsters members and result in loss of pay at the worst possible time.
Employees should be able to choose when to use their personal vacation hours so that they can take time off that fits their own family and religious plans. We demand that the UC give Teamsters members the choice to work during the holiday closures. It is our time and it should be our choice!

Why is this important?

During the holiday season, many employees at the University of California are forced to take days off during "holiday closures". While many prefer not to work during the holidays, the choice should be up to the individual. The closures unfairly target caretakers whose primary obligations are their families. Many parents are left with little to no vacation time in case of child emergencies. New mothers returning from maternity leave cannot accumulate the time needed to cover these forced furloughs and must take the time off without pay. Caretakers with disabled, or elderly, family are left helpless if a crisis should arise.
We believe that every employee should choose when to take their personal time.
