Censure of President-elect Donald Trump by Popular Petition

We the undersigned join together to defend and promote the principles upon which the United States of America was founded. These principles are both explicit and implied. They encompass but are not limited to ideals of freedom, justice, liberty, fairness, and equality.

We recognize these ideals as fundamental human rights, inalienable from both individuals and groups in all their diverse and rich expression. These ideals give us hope and purpose, they guide our nation. They shine so brightly as to reach beyond our borders to even the darkest, distant corners of the world.

We understand that these principles are precious and fragile. They exist only to the extent that we—as individuals and collectively—act with courage, compassion, love, decency and respect for all human beings.

President-elect Donald Trump has repeatedly displayed the most ignoble qualities of human behavior. In words, action, and intent he has shown himself to be sexist, racist, nativist, and xenophobic. In words, action, and intent he has debased and rejected the fundamental principles of the United States of America. He has shaken our faith in ourselves and in our nation. He has damaged our reputation and standing in the world. He has caused the world to question the integrity and honor of the United States of America.

With this petition, we censure President-elect Donald Trump. We demand that he recognize and represent the interests and values of the majority caucus in the United States of America. We reject sexism, racism, nativism, fascism, and xenophobia.

We embrace truth, justice, equality, freedom and all the principles upon which this country stands. We strive to act with courage, love, compassion, generosity, respect, and decency. We demand that Donald Trump, as President of the United States of America, adopt and represent these values and principles in his words, actions, and intent.

Why is this important?

Look, honestly, signing this won’t have much of an impact. I mean, even if this started to really roll, and like a million people signed it (not gonna happen), it’s not going to change things much. On the other hand, each signature has a greater than zero impact; there is absolutely, unconditionally, unequivocally no doubt that you can make a difference and that the course of history shivers ever so slightly with each choice any of us make. Just by choosing, we share, we join, and we create a community of care and love. There are a million moments in every day to choose to believe in the kind of world we want for ourselves and others. And when we do this, we change the energetics. Just a little bit. We can believe. And by believing we change the world.

I really think that every moment of every day is a time and a chance to show up and represent what we believe in. You win some, you lose some. But when we learn to be steady in love and consciousness… that’s a powerful thing. There’s enough people who’ve lived on this planet that have shown us how it’s done. It’s an extraordinary thing to see.

Me? I remember this maybe once a week. Maybe once a day, on a good week. Maybe for an hour or two, on a good day. But I try. And I’m remembering it right now. Love and light, Kevin.
