Congress hasn't debated or authorized any U.S. military operations since 2001. In the past 16 years, the 2001 AUMF has been used by both Republican and Democratic administrations to authorize more than 37 military actions in 14 countries around the world. It's time for Congress to re-assert its Constitutional responsibility to debate and authorize U.S. military operations. Please support Congresswoman Lee's (D-CA) amendment in the Defense Appropriations bill to sunset the 2001 AUMF.
Why is this important?
Congress must reclaim its Constitutional responsibility to review and debate the AUMF and military operations overseas. This responsibility is essential to the balance of powers, to our national security, to our economic wellbeing and it is a responsibility owed to the great sacrifices made by American troops abroad and to the civilians caught in the crosshairs.
