Display the Statue of Liberty's poem in every state capitol

To be delivered to Every governor in the United States

Petition Statement

Display the poem "The New Colossus," which is emblazoned on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, in a public, permanent display on the grounds of your statehouse. Because every state in the union should declare the welcoming message symbolized by the Statue of Liberty and captured in that poem: Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free."

Petition Background

The Statue of Liberty, one of the most enduring and iconic symbols in America, is under attack. Metaphorically, her message of welcome––embodied in her torch held high to immigrants and echoed in the famous poem inscribed on her pedestal––is under attack by the rhetoric and rightwing policies that vilify immigrants and refugees. And now, more recently, even her history is under attack, as Trump adviser Stephen Miller tried to dismiss the connection between the Emma Lazarus poem "The New Colossus" and the statue.

The truth is that the poem, known for its famous welcoming spirit, is a threat to today's rightwing ideology, which is why Miller is tired of being confronted with these words:

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

While the Statue of Liberty may stand in New York harbor, she's a symbol for all American, and it's up to all of us to stand with her, echo her message, and defend her from these assaults. That's why every state capitol in the country should erect a permanent and public display with Lazarus's poem, so that everywhere you go in America, you are met with the words of welcome that we should aspire to uphold.
