Fair Pay and a Fair Deal for Lecturers at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville

IN RECOGNITION OF THE FACT THAT on average, UTK lecturers are paid less than lecturers at our Southern peer institutions (12 percent less than lecturers at the University of Kentucky and 26 percent less than those at our aspirational peer the University of Georgia);

AND THAT the Modern Language Association has recommended a minimum base salary of $10,900 per 3-credit course;

AND THAT lecturers play critical roles in fulfilling the University of Tennessee’s teaching mission by teaching more than one-third of all classes;

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, CALL ON THE INSTITUTION, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville,

TO IMPLEMENT THE POLICIES IN THE FACULTY HANDBOOK approved by the Board of Trustees in June 2019 regarding the participation of non-tenure track faculty in governance and the fair hiring, review, and promotion of non-tenure track faculty;

AND TO INSTITUTE A GUARANTEED MINIMUM SALARY of at least $50,000 per year for all full-time faculty working at UTK, a minimum salary of $59,500 per year for full-time faculty promoted to Senior Lecturer, and a minimum salary of $68,500 per year for full-time faculty promoted to Distinguished Lecturer.

We demand that these changes be implemented within all colleges at UTK, by Fall Semester 2020.

Why is this important?

Lecturers at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, require fair pay and a fair deal.
