Greene St Proposal: Add Bike Lanes

Dear City of Greensboro Mayor Vaughan, City Council Members, MPO Committee, and GDOT:

The proposal for a 2-way conversion of Greene Street would result in safer conditions than those currently, but the proposal does not include bike infrastructure. This is unacceptable considering the main entrance to the Guilford County Courthouse and the Family Justice Center are located on Greene. Both are places that all kinds of people -- whether on foot, on a bike, in a car, or riding transit -- need to be able to access safely. We recommend eliminating one of the proposed two southbound lanes and adding protected bike lanes, or at the very least painted bike lanes, so that people on bikes can travel safely. Not only would that be an equitable approach to transportation planning, but it also would encourage more people to bike, invigorating communities and businesses downtown. And it would help slow traffic and make for a safer environment for all.

It is the City of Greensboro’s responsibility to ensure that all people can travel safely on public streets, regardless of their mode of transportation. Complete streets are also in-line with the mission of Greensboro’s initiative Vision Zero. Let’s get Vision Zero off on the right foot and add bike lanes to Greene St! Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Why is this important?

Bicycling in Greensboro (BIG) is starting this petition because bicycling is an integral part of our community. The City of Greensboro has an obligation to provide people with the safest conditions possible on public roads, regardless of their mode of transportation.
