Senator Bill Nelson: Stop the Sabal Trail Pipeline

Call for a halt in construction of the Sabal Trail Pipeline (Part of the Southeast Market Pipeline) compressor stations and export terminals associated with it;
Call for an investigation into the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for the numerous abuses suffered as a consequence of the indiscriminate rubber-stamping of extreme energy projects without careful examination and mitigation, or ample public participation.

Why is this important?

There is currently a pending lawsuit related to Sabal Trail that was filed against FERC by Sierra Club, Flint Riverkeeper and Chattahoochee Riverkeeper in the U.S. District Court of Appeals in D.C. that challenges FERC’s approval of the Southeast Market Pipeline, saying FERC did not analyze the climate impacts of the project and did not research less environmentally destructive routes.
Burning 1.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas each day is in violation of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
Sabal Trail Pipeline, a 515-mile project is slated to gouge its way through the Floridan Aquifer, through our sensitive karst geology, wetlands and under numerous rivers, including the Withlacoochee, Suwannee, and Flint Rivers, endangering the source of drinking water for up to 90% of north and Central Florida’s residents.
Construction and drilling releases hazardous materials, and can leak and explode into waterways.
Sabal Trail is cutting through the center of Florida’s world-famous springs, and would endanger our most valuable asset.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, is funded through fees from the industry itself, a severe form of crony capitalism, and is a rubber-stamp operation for the oil and gas industry.

In the case of Sabal Trail Pipeline, there have been many discrepancies between what Sabal Trail Transmission, LLC reported to FERC and realities on the ground like sinkholes and cave systems within close proximity of the proposed pipeline.
Land has been taken through eminent domain when much of the gas will be exported. The permitting process is faulty.
There must be environmental justice for Floridians.

Floridians rely on our precious water resources and tourist industry. We need a legislature concerned with sea-level rise, and interested in balancing sustainable development with responsible business practices. Please stop Sabal Trail Pipeline
