Stop New Generation of Nuclear Weapons, Save $1 Trillion

I strongly oppose the Obama administration's plan for a 30 year program to “modernize” the US nuclear weapons arsenal. I urge the President and Congress to pursue peaceful diplomacy to reduce and eliminate nuclear weapons worldwide. As a first step, please co-sponsor the Smarter Approach to Nuclear Expenditures Act (SANE Act) (H.1534/S.831), introduced by Sen. Ed Markey and Rep. Earl Blumenauer, which would make immediate cuts of $100 billion to halt the nuclear buildup.

Why is this important?

Nuclear weapons pose a grave threat to people and the environment, and must never be used. By building more accurate, "usable" weapons, the Pentagon's plan actually increases the risk of nuclear war. Also, NY State's share of the proposed nuclear buildup would be a whopping $90 billion over 30 years. We can put this money to much better use by investing in clean energy, housing, education, health care and mass transit.
