Support SCU Adjunct Faculty and Lecturers

Adjunct faculty and lecturers at Santa Clara are seeking a fair vote on unionization in order to determine how best to improve their working conditions and increase their contribution to the campus community. Most classes at Santa Clara University are taught by adjuncts and lecturers who do not have access to the same job security, governance rights, and other benefits as tenure-stream faculty. Father Engh, the president of Santa Clara University, is currently deciding whether to partner with adjuncts and lecturers to hold a neutral party, in-house vote on unionization.

We, the undersigned, support the right of adjunct faculty and lecturers at Santa Clara University to freely vote on whether to form a union. Jesuit values of solidarity, justice and ethics are woven into the fabric of a Santa Clara University Education. As Dolores Huerta said when asked about adjunct faculty and lecturer unionization efforts, “Our educational institutions should be at the forefront of justice…they shouldn’t have to be dragged into justice.”

We ask that Father Engh and Santa Clara's administration partner with faculty in a manner consistent with the university’s values through holding a fair and just vote on unionization. We pledge to support Santa Clara faculty as they seek improvements for themselves, their students, and the Santa Clara community.

Why is this important?

I am a member of SCCAP, the largest social justice organization on SCU campus. I believe that my professors deserve the right to self-determination. They support me day in and day out, and I would like to show support to them in turn.
