North Dakota State’s Attorney Ladd R. Erickson is seeking to criminally charge award-winning journalist Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! with participating in a "riot" for reporting on Native Americans and others who are protesting construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. This blatant attempt by government officials in North Dakota to intimidate and silence a journalist outrages all of us--progressives, conservatives and independents alike--who believe in the First Amendment and constitutional rights in America. We demand that North Dakota stop this attempt to suppress a free press! Drop all charges against Amy Goodman now!!
Why is this important?
This petition is necessary to raise our collective voices against the attempt by government officials in North Dakota to intimidate and silence an award-winning journalist, Amy Goodman of Democracy Now!, who was just doing her job on September 3, 2016, by covering protests of construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline by Native Americans and others opposed to the project. Democracy Now!’s report went viral online, was viewed more than 14 million times on Facebook, and was rebroadcast on many outlets, including CBS, NBC, NPR, CNN, MSNBC and the Huffington Post. This bold attempt to undermine the First Amendment should be abhorrent to all freedom-loving people in the USA and around the world--regardless of whether you are a progressive, conservative or independent. By aggressively fighting these baseless charges, Amy Goodman is standing up for my First Amendment rights, and for the rights of everyone in America.
