To the I.R.S. - End Scientology's Tax Exemption Status

Help us end The Church of Scientology's Tax-Exempt Status!

BACKGROUND: Scientology was first granted tax exempt status in 1957, but promptly lost the privilege in 1967 due to misconduct on the part of the Church's founder, L. Ron Hubbard. Between the 1970's and 1980's the organization went through a flurry of legal battles, but, none the less, persevered. In 1993, the new Church of Scientology, led by Hubbard's successor David Miscavige, was finally re-granted the coveted tax exemption status.

THESIS: In reviewing the legal caveats of I.R.S. tax code, Section 501(c)(3), "The Tax-Exempt Status," it is CLEAR that the Church of Scientology is in violation of their legal responsibilities, the very rules required to be followed for an organization to keep their tax exempt status.

STOLEN VALOR: 10 U.S. Code § 772 states in no uncertain terms that wearing the uniform of a military member is illegal. Scientology's Sea Org tries to get away with this by making minor changes to their dress uniforms, even though the vast majority is based on U.S. Navy officers' prescribed wear. Here's the important part, however. The law defines not only the uniform, as a whole, as being off-limits, but also "distinctive part(s) of the uniform, of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps." Furthermore, they broadened the crime to include uniforms which "resemble" actual military uniforms:

The law states:

(10 U.S. Code § 771 - Unauthorized wearing prohibited)
"Except as otherwise provided by law, no person except a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps, as the case may be, may wear—
(1) the uniform, or a distinctive part of the uniform, of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps; or
(2) a uniform any part of which is similar to a distinctive part of the uniform of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps."

The Sea Org uses, on members' ribbon racks, mock Navy Commendation medals and other similar devices. Their use has not been earned or warranted. Members of the actual Navy who see this are outraged by this. The shoulder insignia, indicating rank, is likewise lifted completely from Navy uniform regulations.

This constitutes an illegal act, and they are, thus, not eligible for tax exemption.

Why is this important?

The people who've been hurt by Scientology have voices, and families have been shattered due to the Church's disconnection policy.
